The biggest leap

The biggest leap since the original iPhone is here. At least, that is how Steve Jobs described it when he officially announced the coming of iPhone 4. The announcement was made during Jobs’ keynote address at Apple’s WWDC.
As far as physical appearances go, the phone looks very similar to the prototype that was acquired by Gizmodo earlier this year. Not much was gleaned from that prototype as it was deactivated remotely. The actual iPhone 4 has been revamped significantly enough to justify Jobs’ comment.
At 9.3 mm’s thick, this version is 24 % thinner than its predecessor. Although it seems like an obvious thing to do, what will make the size significant are the features that are packed into it. The iPhone provides a 5 MP camera as well as a flash. It also has a front facing camera for video calls. The screen resolution has jumped to a whopping of 326 pixels per inch.  This makes text look even better and comparable to print quality text. Contrast has also jumped higher to a ratio of 800:1. Multitasking is finally here. Although it is not the sort of multitasking you experience with computers or even with Symbian apps, it is a vast improvement over the previous iterations of the iPhone.
What makes this look really good is the new processor and battery that Apple has squeezed into the thin body. The A4 mobile processor, which is also found in the iPad, and a larger battery in combination provide longer talk time, more browsing time and of course, longer music and video playback time.
These are some of the major features of the iPhone 4G and it looks like Apple has once again thwarted its opposition.

A New Kindle?

If the rumors are true a new Kindle could be released in August. According to reports from Bloomberg News, a thinner Kindle with sharper picture quality could be in the offing. However, the report did not name the source of the news.

The device will not set the world alight in the same way the iPad has done. Instead it is supposed to focus on having a sharp display and being more responsive to the user’s needs. Basically this means that there is no touch screen or color display. The move is prudent in several ways; first of all it does address the threat posed by the Apple iPad which is rapidly eating into Amazon’s market. Next, it also does not try to be something it isn’t, at least not in a hurry. According to Amazon’s CEO Jeff Bezos, some new technology has been developed but has not been perfected yet. This could be why Amazon has not yet gone for a color reflective screen.

However, next year’s models could be vastly different. Along with a color reflective screen, the device could have touch screen technology included. It was reported in February that a company called Touchco had been purchased by Amazon. Touchco is a startup based in New York and involved with flexible multi-touch panels. This means that by next year, the Kindle could be a very fascinating device.
But all that is just conjecture. For now, Amazon appears to be concentrating on holding onto its base by giving its users what they need – a good reading device.

The Hurt is About to Get Worse

With the news that LimeWire is about to go down in flames, others have found courage to hope. The movie industry has also been battling piracy just as much as the RIAA and the newest and most ambitious entrant in to this foray is Voltage Pictures.

Voltage is the independent production company that responsible for the Oscar winning “Hurt Locker”. The company is going after no less than five thousand John Doe’s in a lawsuit. The names of the persons are not known yet as the company has only been able to collect the IP addresses of the pirates. They want all those who downloaded the movie to delete it from whatever storage mediums they have it on and also pay up actual or statutory damages to cover the expenses of the lawsuits.

The plan seems ambitious and does reek a little of bitterness and money grubbing. It is ambitious because even a massive organization like the RIAA has not been able to succeed in this area. The fact that the movie didn’t make more than 16 million dollars at the home box office also could be due to the movie being downloaded and distributed. The lawsuit could be a way of recovering some of the lost revenue, although it makes Voltage look a little desperate.

The company’s co-founder, Nicolas Chartier, is not bothered by the bad press that may be generated because of this lawsuit. In fact he seems to be quite happy to meet it and will probably find a way to use it to his own benefit.
